It is spring and the butterflies in my habitat cage are hatching! I have 10 chrysalis’s from my fall harvest of eastern black swallowtail eggs found on my parsley and caterpillars on my dill. I am not sure why these 10 decided not to hatch, but instead hibernate or go into what is technically called diapause, but they did. Now I have had one hatching out almost everyday. I am enjoying their beauty. The problem is the temperature hasn’t been conducive to their release. It needs to be sunny and at least 45 degrees for them to be able to fly. I walked outside with one on each pointer finger and they wouldn’t budge. I decided to put some lilacs in the cage and a sponge soaked in sugar water to keep them hydrated. It worked. Had them in the cage for 3 days before I released them. I even took them to my book signing at Faith and Life Bookstore in Newton, KS. The children loved them and the book.
